We were asked by the Derby Branch of the Parkinson’s Society if we would like to decorate Derby Cathedral for their Carol Service on 2nd December 2009. We were delighted to do this for them but as it was Advent we could not actually put the arrangements in place until the morning of the 2nd December. The arrangers were Rose, Denise, Carol, Julie and Kay. We were pleased with the results as were the Parkinson’s Society. The first arrangement is by the Chancel steps, followed by the pedestal near the door, one of the pew ends end and finally the arrangement in the porch

Monday 11th December saw Breaston Flower Circle celebrating their 10th Birthday, when 60 members attended a Dinner and Flower Demonstration at the Lodge on Elm Avenue in Long Eaton.

Breaston Flower Circle Committee 2006

Denise Tasker had decorated the tables with arrangements using Lilies, foliage, gold leaves and black ting ting representing our Club Logo.

The evening commenced with a toast to the Club and the cutting of the Birthday Cake by the three chairmen we have had over the last 10 years. The Birthday Cake, decorated with our Logo had been made and iced by Gill Mills, another of our members. We also received a card from the East Midlands Area of NAFAAS congratulating us on our 10 years. The present Chairman Linda Smith presented our Founder chairman Marion Stokes, with an arrangement of White Lilies.

After a lovely meal our Founder Chairman, Marion Stokes, demonstrated arrangements in the styles popular over the last 10 years, and entertained us for the evening. Her Title was “Congratulations” which means to express pleasure at good fortune.

Past and Present Chairmen

Marion started with a traditional red and green arrangement with candles suitable for Christmas on a black wrought iron stand.

To represent the Flower Circle Marion then demonstrated a design on a circle of oasis with variegated foliages Yellow Pincushion Protea. Yellow roses, Cream Carnations, artificial gold vine leaves and gold poppy heads, again taking the colours from our Club Logo.

10 Years is the Tin Anniversary so her next design used various tin containers with pink and silver being the colour scheme. Beautiful Pink Gerbera, Purple Liatris, Ornamental Cabbages, Pink Feathers with Eucalyptus foliage and Dracena stems (Lucky Bamboo) completed the designs.

Her final design were three complimentary arrangements on Metal stands using Palm leaves, White Longiflora Lilies, White Asiatic Lilies and White Anthuriums.

10th Anniversairy Cake Made by Member Gill Mills

A truly superb evening thoroughly enjoyed by all, with us all looking forward to our next 10 years!

Breaston Flower Circle have had a most wonderful 10th Year. We have had many demonstrations, including Tracey Neal with her “Greenleaf Girl”, Pauline Foster, Pat Billing, Marilyn Ottewell. Lesley Smith demonstrated “Just for Pleasure” for our open July meeting while Catherine Gledhill came with her contemporary demonstration “Just for Christmas” for our December Open meeting.

April saw a party of members and friends visit Holland to see how the Flower Market works and to visit the Keukenhof and Amsterdam to sample the delights of Dutch cuisine. A wonderful weekend with good weather and lots of money spent!

Our garden visit this year was to Tony and Domini Gregory’s lovely garden in Draycott.

We also visited Gawsworth Hall to see the wonderful Christmas arrangements orchestrated by Barry Grey in the beautiful house. I think we all would have like to have lived there. This was followed by lunch at Trentham Gardens with time for Christmas shopping

We finally celebrated our 10 years with a Dinner in December for all our members. Our three chairmen over the last 10 years all cut the Anniversary Cake, Marion Stokes, our founder chairman then demonstrated “Congratulations” showing how arranging had developed over the last 10 years. This was a wonderful end to an exciting year.

2007 is already booked and we have more exciting ideas for our members.

Breaston Flower Circle held a special demonstration on 25th June this year when Ian Buxton demonstrated his “As the Mood Takes Me”. The aim of this demonstration was to raise money for Breast Cancer Care. It was a wonderful evening with Ian pulling out all the stops for us. We raised £854.80 on the night including money from the sale of Cookery Books. These books contained tried and tested recipes from members of the Club. In addition, two of our members, Julie and Linda, who live close to each other, opened their gardens to boost the figure by £512.57. We made the figure up to £1,850 from club funds.

Fund Raising Event

We were able to present cheques at our last meeting of £800 to Veronica Rogers, a specialist Nurse, of the Derby City Breast Unit and £800 to Dr Andrew Evans, a Consultant Radiologist, from the Breast Unit at Nottingham City Hospital. The money donated to Nottingham would go towards the building of the new screening unit now being built on the Nottingham City Hospital site. The money to Derby would be put towards new equipment. We also gave £250 to The national charity - Breast Cancer Care based in Sheffield.
